Web Retailers Brace For Holiday Sales
'Tis the season for consumers to do their shopping online, and while
analysts said such sales could soar as high as $8 billion for the full 1999
year, the holiday season is also the moment of truth for many Web retailers who
must prove their worth. Overall, analysts expect online holiday sales to reach
anywhere between $4 billion to $6 billion this season, more than double the
amount last year, with toys and consumer electronics being the top sellers. For
the full 1999 year, broker Volpe, Brown Whelan estimates $8.5 billion in
spending, up from $3.0 billion in 1998. More...

over last week when it debuted on the Lycos 50 at the No. 36 spot.

Pokemon Fever Sweeps Kids into Courts
With Pokemon fever sweeping through the ranks of the nation's
middle-school set, more and more cases of Poke-mania are winding up in the
nation's police blotters and accident reports.
On Monday, an 11-year-old student at Amphitheater Middle School in Tucson,
Ariz., was arrested and charged with armed robbery after allegedly using a knife
to threaten another boy and steal numerous playing cards linked to the movie and
popular television series.
On Oct. 12 in Sarasota, Fla., an 11-year-old boy was so eager to get one of the
cards that he agreed to be scorched on the arm with a cigarette by a 33-year-old
man, who offered to give the youngster a card in return for his suffering the
burn. The man was charged with felony aggravated child abuse in the incident.
On Nov. 12 in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., two Los Angeles area boys, ages 12
and 13, were arrested after they allegedly stole dozens of cards as part of a
Pokemon theft ring. Police said the boys stole as many as 170 of the cards from
several different area elementary schools.
On Nov. 11 in Cleveland, a sixth-grader at Garrett-Morgan Middle School was hit
by a car and seriously injured when he ran into the car while playing Pokemon
with a group of other students after school. A crossing guard told reporters
that the boy had stolen a card from another student and was running away with
it. Police and school official said they could neither confirm nor deny the
statement. More..

Beanie Fraud Bust
Barbara Arakelian and Darren Baker of Highlands, New Jersey, were
charged in the complaint with selling Beanie Babies, Furbies and other toys for
hundreds of dollars through the on-line auction service e-Bay, but not filling
the orders. Baker also took $505 from an on-line buyer for two Bruce
Springsteen concert tickets but failed to send them, the complaint alleged.
Businesses Do Most of Online Buying
For most people, e-commerce brings to mind Beanie Baby
auctions or battling bookstores. But businesses, not consumers, are doing most
of the buying and selling online. Inspired by the
success of online retail merchants, companies are dealing with one another over
the Internet, trading in everything from coal to computer components to cows.
Business deals will account for two-thirds or more of the money moving on the
Internet this year, and that amount will keep increasing, analysts say. More...

Ty Warner - The Secretive Tycoon
Warner, 55, is the Howard Hughes of the toy world; secretive, a shrewd manipulator and
peerless marketing man who, in the information age, knows the selling-power of being
elusive. In six short years he has converted an idea so simple that everyone asks
"Why didn't I think of that?" into a company with a net annual profit of $700
million (£437.5 million) and a personal fortune of $7 billion. H. Ty Warner
was the elder child of Harold Warner, a jewellery and toy salesman, and his pianist wife,
Georgia. His younger sister, Joyce, is 51. His parents went through a bitter divorce and
Harold died of a heart attack in 1983. Georgia - described as an elegant woman who still
wears long gloves like those worn by film stars of old - lives in an apartment that her
son bought her in a gated enclave two miles from his own surprisingly modest home. More....
Pokemon Ball Kills Boy - $100 Million Lawsuit Filed
The family of a 7-year-old boy who choked to death on a popular "Pokemon"
ball filed a $100 million lawsuit against Hasbro Inc. and Toys R Us, alleging
the toy was unsafe and failed to contain proper warnings. The wrongful
death suit, filed in Manhattan federal court by the family of Robert Brazier,
alleged the Pokemon Power Bouncer is a dangerous size that can easily lodge in a
child's throat. More...
Kids Arrested for Stealing Pokemon Cards
Criminals rob banks because, as Willie Sutton once said, that's where the
money is. Now, authorities say, two young boys ransacked backpacks at local
elementary schools because that's where the Pokemon cards were. Two Los
Angeles-area boys, ages 12 and 13, were arrested this week after they allegedly
stole dozens of Pokemon cards from unsuspecting youngsters. More...
Pokemon Moms Buy Out Theaters
Warner Bros. spokeswoman Nancy Kirkpatrick said she knew of several
instances in which "people were going in and buying out (movie) houses for
their entire elementary school for Saturday morning. These were real moms
who had gotten together and decided to do this,'' she added. The "Pokemon"
movie craze has overwhelmed a multimillion-dollar promotional tie-in at Burger
King, leaving kids crying, parents irate and the fast-food chain rushing by
land, sea and air to meet a whopping demand for promised toys and trading cards.
At theaters, "Pokemon: The First Movie" has proved such a big hit that
distributor Warner Bros. said it was running out of the promotional trading
cards it was giving away with ticket purchases. More...
SERIES 4 Card Reported!
By Noel - Guest Reporter
Thought you would like to know that I found Series 4 cards this evening in
CT. I bought 10 packs, and I got a Silver Schweetheart buddy card, a
Silver Mooch wild card, a Silver Canyon birthday card, and a Retired Purple
Fetch Card #1184/7056! These cards are beautiful - the best so far!
The commons and the artist proofs are like Series 3, with the backgrounds,
but now there are commons such as Groovy, Slowpoke, Orange Digger and Radar!
The artist proofs also have the same background, but being that they are
Series 4 - they look extra good! I think getting 3 silvers and a retired out
of 10 packs is pretty rare! (oh, and when I got the silver schweetheart
buddy card, right behind it was a red/orange chilly beanie card - so I got 2
of them in the same pack!) 1998 Holiday Teddy common card is cut all funny on
the top.
I am going back out tomorrow on the mad search for some more boxes - as soon
as I find any more information out (like, which cards are the retireds, for
example - oh, I can tell you that Blackie is also a retired card) I will let you know.
I am assuming there are 4 colors, as I have three, and if Ty is following the
other series, there are orange, purple, silver, and gold.
Odds: 164 Total Card Set, including Common Cards "Artist Proof" (1 per
pack), Wild Cards (odds 1 in 3 packs) Birthday Cards (odds 1 in 5 packs),
Babies and Buddies (odds 1 in 12 packs) Classic Commons (odds 1 in 24 packs)
Retired Cards or Autographed Cards (odds 1 in 72 packs), Plus a Beanie Babies
Glow in the Dark Sticker Card (1 per pack) and an Official Club Mini-Magazine
(1 per pack).
So, it looks like the same odds as Series 3, with a few more in this Series.
The sticker cards are neat - very different from last series!
Special Thanks to Noel for the Report!!!
Pokemon Movie Shatters Record!
Pokemon: The First Movie grossed more than $10 million on its opening day, cashing in on
America's latest kiddie craze to post the biggest Wednesday release for an animated film,
according to box office figures issued Thursday.
With ticket sales of nearly $10.1 million, the feature film based on the wildly popular
"Pokemon" TV series imported from Japan far Shattered the previous Wednesday
opening record of $4.8 million, set by "Toy Story" the day before Thanksgiving
in 1995.

Pokemon Games are Hot Sellers
Through the first ten months of 1999, Nintendo's Pokemon franchise, comprised of Pokemon
Pinball, Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Yellow and the original Blue and Red versions of Pokemon,
has accounted for 10.5 percent of all console video game software units sold and 8.9
percent of revenue in the U.S., according to market researcher PC Data.
In the rapidly expanding Game Boy market, Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Red, Pokemon Yellow and
Pokemon Pinball are the four top-selling titles of the year respectively. Together, these
titles account for 46.9 percent of all Game Boy software units sold and 48.3 percent of
all dollar sales. In October, their share was greater, combining for 75.3 percent of all
Game Boy units sold and 75.1 percent of the revenue. More...
Ebay's Meg Whitman Honored
GLAMOUR magazine names Meg Whitman among its 1999 Women of the Year in the December issue,
crediting the 43-year-old eBay CEO with transforming the online auction website from a
revolutionary idea into an astounding $18 billion business. "In 1999, all of America
caught eBay fever," says GLAMOUR. "eBay's brilliant concept - buyers and sellers
can deal directly - changed the way we think about shopping. But a great idea can run on
buzz for just so long. Enter Meg Whitman.'' Back in 1997, when eBay founder Pierre Omidyar
approached then Hasbro executive Whitman, she had no technical expertise, and online
properties were risky ventures. "But this mother of two young boys realized her
blue-chip marketing skills could take the company to a level beyond anyone's
dreams..." More...
Pokemon Movie A Hit - Almost out of Cards
Buoyed by the riotous enthusiasm among its young fans and warm reception among critics,
Kids' WB! Presents ``Pokemon The First Movie'' is attracting such strong numbers on
opening day that theaters are fast running out of the special-edition trading cards being
given away with each ticket sold. "We believed our generous supply of many
millions of cards would last at least the first week, but the fact that we now find
ourselves nearly tapped out after only one day just reinforces our belief
in the tremendous appeal of both our movie and the entire Pokemon phenomenon.'' In a
further attempt to keep up with demand, Warner Bros. is also providing theaters which have
run out of cards with stand-alone coupons that can be mailed in along with a ``Pokemon The
First Movie'' ticket stub to receive a free card also on a while-supplies-last basis.

Cyrk, Inc. Announces results for Third Quarter
For the third quarter, the Company reported net sales of $258.8 million compared with
$163.7 million for the third quarter ended September 30, 1998. Net income for the quarter
totaled $7.8 million or $0.48 per diluted share, compared with a net loss of $245,000 or a
loss of $0.02 per diluted share reported for the same period a year ago.
"In 1999, the Company's seasonal pattern of sales and earnings, including a loss in
the first quarter and significant revenues and profitability in the second half of the
year, was primarily attributed to the sale of Ty Beanie Babies® product. Much has been
written about the mystery surrounding Ty's plans for its Beanie Babies® brand for the
year 2000. This situation has introduced an unusually high degree of uncertainty which
will impact the operating loss we expect in the first quarter of next year. However, we
remain bullish about our relationship with Ty Inc. We are actively engaged at Ty and are
prepared to service Ty under a variety of volume scenarios in 2000.'' More...

Couple Told to Split Beanies
A divorced couple couldn't agree on how to split their Beanie Baby collection, so a judge
ordered them on Friday to divide up the babies one by one in a courtroom. "It's
ridiculous and embarrassing," said Frances Mountain, moments before squatting on the
courtroom floor alongside her ex-husband to choose first from a pile of dozens of stuffed
toys. Maple the Bear was the first to go, as a few people in the gallery snickered.
Frances and Harold Mountain divorced four months ago and, according to the divorce
decree, were supposed to split their Beanie Baby collection, estimated to be worth between
$2,500 and $5,000. But they failed to do so, and after Mountain filed a motion
to get his share of the litter, the judge said he had had enough. "Because you
folks can't solve it, it takes the services of a ... judge, a bailiff and a court
reporter," Family Court Judge Gerald Hardcastle told the ex-couple.
Teen Arrested in Pokemon Mugging

Despite having given up the IP addresses, AuctionWatch is going to vigorously fight
this process. One analyst questioned eBay's blocking strategy. "That'll upset a

analyst at Giga Information Group. "If you have a concern, you come up with your own

Pokeman Fruit Snacks to Contain Special Card
The Pokemon
phenomenon hits the fruit snack aisle this week. Grocery stores across the country are
preparing for the rush of kids who can't wait to get their hands on Pokemon Punch Red
Rolls. Many retailers won't be surprised if the new Pokemon Rolls prove difficult to
