You play a boy named Ash Ketchum, of course you can re-name him, along with
your rival, Gary, who can also be re-named. You start off your journey in Pallet
Town, a small little town where hardly anyone knows of. After getting your
starting Pokémon, Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle, you head off into the
world, trying to accomplish your goals of becoming a Pokémon Master.
Trying to figure out how and what to do is pretty easy, because I believe
that this game was designed for young children. The controls are very, very
easy. Direction Pad to Move, A to Select, B to Cancel. Even the game playing is
simple. What's there pretty much to do? Walk around, find Pokémon, catch Pokémon,
battle Pokémon, get Badges, finish game.
You have to remember that Pokémon is on Game Boy, so that means they can't
go all out of graphics. The graphics are actually quite nice for a Game Boy game
though.
Pokemon Game Boy Tips
First off name your character and your rival. Then go to
the computer and withdraw your Potion. Go outside to the north and into the
grass when Prof. Oak will stop you. He brings you to his Lab and talks about
your first Pokémon. There are only 3 here, the Charmander, Squirtle, and
Bulbasaur. It will matter what you choose. Chose the one you want and then
your rival will challenge you. If you win, you get Exp and if you
lose...well you lose. Then go back to where Oak stopped you and head north
to Viridan City.
At Viridan City go to the Mart and talk to the store's
clerk. He will give you Oak's Parcels and you return them to Prof. Oak. Once
you've done that buy some Poké Balls and capture a Pidgey and Rattata. When
you raised them up to an adequate Level, go through the Viridan Forest and
capture a Weedle, Caterpie, and Pikachu.
When out of the forest you should be ready to fight Brock,
the Pewter City GYM Leader. Be careful because if you have chosen the
Charmander, build it up some Levels before fighting. After you defeated
Brock, head on to Mt. Moon where you get a Geodude, Zubat, and Jigglypuff.
Remember to get the important Rare Candy and Moon Stone here! Reach the end
of the Mt. Moon irritating cave and beat the Nerd. You will have a choice of
either the Helix or Dome Fossil. Choose either because the Helix contains
Omanyte and the Dome contains Kabuto. You may turn them into the Pokémon at
the Laboratory later in the game.
Get out of Mt. Moon and head east to Cerulean City. Here is
the GYM Leader, Misty. She uses Water Pokémon. Beat her Staryu and Starmie
and head north of the city to a bridge. Beat the kids on the bridge and the
Rocket member and fight more and more til you reach a house. This is Bill,
the Pokémaniac's house. Talk to him and he will appear to be a Pokémon.
Follow his directions and he will morph back and give you a S.S. Ticket.
Head south to Vermilion City and go south again to the dock.
In the S.S. Anne, be sure to talk to the Captain and
receive the HM for Cut. Before you go to get the Cut, your rival will
confront you. Beat him and get the HM. Now go into every room and get all
the items and leave.
Now you have the Cut HM so use it on one of your Grass Pokémon.
When you go back into Vermilion City use the Cut and go beat Lt. Surge with
his Electric Pokémon. Once you're finished go to one of the houses and talk
to a man who will bore you with some speech and he'll give you a coupon for
a bike. So now head back to Curelean City and get the bike. Don't forget to
trade a Spearow for a Farfetch'd with one of the children in Vermilion City.
You should go east and into Diglett's Cave to catch Diglett
and Dugtrio. You will pop up back near Pewter City. Since you have the Cut,
it will be handy. Remember to have an Abra and trade it for the Mr. Mime.
If you didn't want to go through the cave, go east and
build Levels. When you reach the house, if you have collected 30 Pokémon,
Prof. Oak's Aide will give you the Item Finder. You will also notice if you
try to cross east, a Snorlax is blocking the way. There isn't a way to move
him til later.
Since you have found there isn't a way to go anywhere, head
back to Curelean City and go east to the Rock Tunnel. Be sure that you've
found the HM Flash from Professor Oak's Aide. If you somehow managed to make
it through the cave without the Flash, like I did once, you will end up
going to Lavender Town. Be sure to catch the Machop and Onix in the Rock
Tunnel.
At Lavender Town there will be a lot of fuss over a
Cubone's mother dying. Ignore this for now and head west to Celadon City.
Here you can buy almost ANYTHING from the Mart. Head to Game Center and talk
to the Rocket member in front of a poster. He will fight you and when you
beat him, he'll run crying to his boss. Once again more fighting and so on.
You will need the Lift Key to use the elevator. When you beat the Rocket's
Leader, Giovanni, he will give you the Silph Scope. Now it's time to go to
Lavender Town.
Go into the Pokémon Tower and catch the Gastly, Haunter,
and Cubone. When you reach the top you will fight the Cubone's mother,
Marowak. Then fight Rocket members again and save the man named Mr. Fuji. By
saving him he will award you with the Poké Flute to wake up Snorlax.
If you want to, head back to Celadon City and play some
Slots. But first you will need the Coin Case, get it from a man who says he
lost all of his money because of the Slots. Collect coins from people and
behind them in the Game Center and play some Slots. It will seem rigged, but
sometimes it gives a lot. It took me a while to gain the Coins. The Pokémon
that is really worth getting is the Porygon. Remember to go behind one of
the bigger houses and get an Eevee. Also get some stinken drinks from the
vending machines! These drinks will allow you to pass through those roads
with the dumb thirsty guards! Sheesh. If you are ready, fight Erika and her
Grass Pokémon in the Celadon City GYM. Lastly, use the Poké Flute, if you
have it already to wake up the Snorlax. You will need an Ultra Ball to
capture him! Get the Ultra Balls and Fuchsia City.
If you didn't do that then head south of Lavender Town and
you will see the Snorlax sleeping. I don't know about you, but I killed this
one because a Great Ball won't catch him. There's a lady in a hidden house
with the HM, Fly. Now head southwest to Fuchsia City and play in the Safari
Zone! Here is a list of most of the Pokémon in the zone: Nidoran Male,
Nidoran Female, Nidorino, Nidorina, Paras, Parasect, Venonat, Venomoth,
Psyduck, Slowpoke, Doduo, Krabby, Exeggcute, Ryhorn, Chansey, Kangaskhan,
Scyther, Tauros, and Dratini. You will need the Super Rod to get most of the
Water Pokémon. The Dratini is only available in the Area 2 lake. Be sure to
find the Secret House and the Warden's Tetth to gain the HMs, Surf and
Strength. Also buy some Ultra Balls because you'll need them later for
catching the rare birds.
When you finished this fun experience, head off to Saffron
City and fight the stupid Silph Co. They have merged with Team Rocket and so
this is just the most irritating part in the game. The maze is pretty hard
until you find that one teleporter that brings you to your rival. Fight your
rival and beat him. Once that's done, talk to the Silph Employee. He will
reward you with a Lapras. Then go on and fight Giovanni again. Talk to the
President of Silph Co. and he will give you the Master Ball! This Poké Ball
catches any Pokémon no matter what. Save it for Mewtwo though!
Once that's done, head on to the smaller GYM. Here are some
Martial Artists and they fight you. Beat their leader and you will get a
choice of either a Hitmonlee or a Hitmochan. Then head on to the bigger GYM
and fight Sabrina and her Psychic Pokémon.
Now head back to Fuchsia City and fight Koga and his Poison
Pokémon at the Pokémon GYM. Be sure that in one of those crossing houses
with the dumb guards, there will be another one of Prof. Oak's Aides. If you
have 50 or more Pokémon he will award you with the Exp. All. Once that's
done, be sure that someone has the Surf HM equipped. Surf down southwest to
the Seafoam Islands.
At the Seafoam Islands you will need to push boulders,
using Strength, to lower the water's Level. Once you got that done, go and
fight Articuno, one of the strongest Pokémon whos type is Ice. To catch him
you will need to get him down to below 10 HP and put him to Sleep. Leave the
Seafoam Islands and head to Cinnabar Island.
Finally the Laboratory is here. If you have either the
Helix or Dome Fossils and the Old Amber (from Pewter City) you can give it
to one of the Scientists. Once again you get an Omanyte from the Helix
Fossil, a Kabuto from the Dome Fossil, and an Aerodactyl from the Old Amber.
Then go to the larger building on the island. Here you will need to find the
Secret Key, which allows you to open the GYM which is locked. Mess your way
through the switches on the Pokémon statues and get the key. Go to the GYM
and fight Blaine who uses Fire Pokémon. Finish him and head back to
Viridian City.
Wonder what's going on here? Well go to the GYM, it was
previously locked. Now you will fight your way through some tough Trainers
and fight the GYM's Leader, who is none other than Giovanni. After beating
him, he'll say that Team Rocket is over and he'll devote his life to the
study of Pokémon. Now that you've gotten all 8 Badges, you can go and
contend in the Pokémon League.
But first, you should go to the Power Plant and catch
Zapdos. The Power Plant is located near the Rock Tunnel. You will need a Pokémon
with Surf to get there. In the Power Plant there are many Electric Pokémon.
Make your way through finding items (some are Voltorbs and Electrodes) and
soon you will run into Zapdos. To catch him you will need to put him to
Sleep and use an Ultra Ball to catch it, same strategy as Articuno. Now head
back to Viridan City.
Head to the west and your rival will run into you. He'll
challenge you and get ready for a fight. Beat your rival and then go to the
large building. As you pass people, they'll ask for the Badges. Show them
and continue to the north. Here's a setting like a cave where you have to
use Strength again to move the boulders onto those buttons. Make your way
through the cave and to the Indigo Plateau.
Here is the last stop for items and to heal and change Pokémon!
Get the best of them and get ready for a big fight! The Elite Four is next
and they consist of Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha, and Lance. First you will have
to fight Lorelei's Pokémon. They are Dewgong, Cloyster, Slowbro, Jynx, and
Lapras in that order. Next is Bruno who has Onix, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee,
Onix, and Machamp in that order. Following is Agatha who has Gengar, Golbat,
Haunter, Arbok, Gengar in that order. Last is Lance who has Gyarados,
Dragonair, Dragonair, Aerodactyl, and Dragonite in that order. You've beat
them? Congratulations! You have defeated the Elite Four and you're now a Pokémon
Master! But wait, someone has beaten them already and is the Pokémon
Champion. It's your rival. Head on into the next room and kick his buttocks.
He has Pidgeot, Alakazam, and Rhydon. He has three more, but let me say
this. It matters on what he chose in the beginning. If he chose Bulbasaur,
you fight Gyarados and Arcanine. If he chose Squirtle, you fight Arcanine
and Exeggcutor. If he chose Charmander, you fight Gyarados and Exeggutor.
When you beat the two, you fight the Pokémon he chose at the beginning.
Good luck against him! When you beat him, Prof. Oak will come and
congratulate you and off you and your Pokémon go into the Hall of Fame!
Wait! Don't turn off the game! Remember the blocked cave in
Cerulean City? Go there and get Mewtwo, the strongest Pokémon in the game.
Then do whatever you want with the game. Get all 150 Pokémon by evolving,
trading with friends, and catching them. When you accomplish that, you will
get some kind of certificate from a guy in Celadon City.
